Workshops Offered

Graphic Novels

Learn the vocabulary and terminology of graphic novels, hone your drawing techniques, and study the craft of published work. Then create a character, develop a plot...and write your own graphic novel!

The Fundamentals of Sentence Construction

Learn the basic terms and elements of sentences. Structured and engaging lessons on grammar and conventions develop stronger, more confident writers.

Responsible & Creative AI Use in Writing

AI is making headlines as a way to write fast and effectively, but… how does it work, and can it really create high-quality text? Writers learn about the systems and engineering behind programs like ChatGPT, about prompt engineering, and about limitations and possibilities of these powerful tools.

Sports Reporting and More

Sports enthusiasts love watching highlights of exciting endings and skillful plays, and sports reporters love writing about them! Writers watch great points, shots, and saves, thinking about how they can bring those moments to life in writing. We’ll even have sports professionals make some guest appearances (by Zoom) to share the importance of writing in their lives.

TedTalks

What’s your passion? Writers in this workshop will identify a topic that matters, watch several TED talks, many by young people, and find inspiration and mentorship to create their own 10-12 minute monologue on something they want to share, change, or celebrate in the world.

Novel Writing

Develop a plot for a novel-- a new one or a work-in-progress! Plan and practice writing engaging chapters with guidance on structure, storytelling, and revision.

Poetry

Learn to see the world through a poet’s eyes. Writers study favorite poems and gain inspiration for poems of their own. They will spend time working on the techniques modeled by published poets, learn various poetry forms, and finish the workshop with their own anthology of poems.

Journalism

Not only will this session help writers learn to write and report on real-life events, it will also help them to become more savvy consumers of the news they will consume by other writers and reporters. Writers will transform into reporters who are bound to see the world differently!

Personal Statements

Whether for school applications, employment opportunities, or other reasons, personal statements that highlight core values and achievements are important compositions. Find an engaging idea and create an essay that highlights your unique self, strengths, and accomplishments.

November/December Schedule Here

Fan Fiction

Most writers have favorite authors and books, and sometimes those authors and books inspire writers to read them over and over again, unready for the stories to end. The Fan Fiction workshop keeps favorite stories going because writers create new adventures for beloved characters.

Technology Tools

Students have a plethora of options within the world of technology. Students learn to use digital tools for brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, and publishing. Each session builds confidence, creativity, and practical skills, showing students how technology enhances—not replaces—their voice as writers when they use it intentionally.
